Professor Antoniou is a Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, Deputy Director of Research & Innovation for the Oldham Care Organization, and Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) Honorary Clinical Chair at The University of Manchester.

He leads aninternational collaborative research network, applying meta-analytical methods and the systematic review methodology to inform decision making and improve clinical outcomes in surgery/vascular surgery. His research output is reflected in the >270 peer reviewed publications (including 5 Cochrane reviews) that have attracted >7,000 citations with a h factor of 47 (as of November 2021), the 1st/senior authorship of >100 peer reviewed systematic reviews in surgery/vascular surgery, and several educational papers on systematic review methodology.

He is a member of the Guidelines Steering Committee of the European Society for Vascular Surgery (ESVS), lead of the methodology group of writing committees of ESVS clinical practice guidelines, a member of the writing committee of theEuropean Hernia Society guidelines, and a member of the international Guideline Assessment Project (GAP) consortium. He is a statistical/methodology reviewer for systematic reviews/meta-analyses for the European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgeryand editor/editorial board member for scientific journals, including the Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine. He has been invited to peer-review scientific papers submitted to more than 100 journals including the The NEJM and The Lancet.

He is the principal investigatorfor several NIHR portfolio studies. He is co-investigator for the project: “Developing and evaluating a tool to protect patients from fabricated and falsified data in health systematic reviews”. He is the chief investigator of the “Risk stratification and prediction in endovascular aneurysm repair” study and leadsthe International Risk stratification in EVAR (IRIS-EVAR) working group.

Alongside his academic activity, Professor Antoniou maintains a full-timesurgical practice, with clinical expertise in open and endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, carotid surgery, surgery for peripheral arterial disease, and minimally invasive treatments for superficial venous disease.)
