Stavros Antoniou was born in Athens, Greece. He received his undergraduate degree in Thessaloniki, Greece and postgraduate clinical and research training in Greece, Germany and the United Kingdom. He holds a PhD in minimally invasive surgery, a Master Degree in Public Health and Health Business Administration and he is Fellow of the European Board of Surgery and the American College of Surgeons.
His scholarly work is focused on synthesis of evidence (meta-analysis, meta-regression, trial sequential analysis, network meta-analysis) and he has performed extensive research on the quality of clinical research. He is a certified guideline methodologist (INGUIDE certification program) and currently the chair of the EAES Guidelines Subcommittee. He serves as member of the advisory board of Cochrane Greece. He has a track record of over 150 publications in peer reviewed journals, an h-index of 33 and citation count of >3500.
He has served as coordinator or member of several guideline development groups, he is subject editor in Surgical Endoscopy, and associated editor in numerous peer-reviewed journals. He serves or has served as a reviewer for governmental and non-profit grant awarding bodies of Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Canada. He is a consultant general surgeon at the Mediterranean Hospital of Cyprus.)
